How has the pandemic affected students, what trends are observed in education, how are companies collaborating with schools to train future specialists - we asked these and other questions to Elina Streikmane, a teacher of Russian language and literature at the Digital School educational institution, as part of the podcast "How is this possible?" of the Russia - Land of Opportunities platform .

Today, there are openly available online courses and programs that can be downloaded with one button. What is the importance of an educational institution now?

It's simple: people used to be able to go to the library, study a whole bunch of books, and learn the same things they were taught at school or university. But no one did that, everyone went to an educational institution to teachers who provided structured and systematized information prepared specifically for students. Google will never replace a teacher.

There are now structured courses that you can simply turn on and listen to one after another. But is there still a need for verification and clarification?

Today, the position of the teacher is changing altogether. Several on page seo service decades ago, the teacher was the only source of knowledge, there was no alternative. And if earlier we could not find information on the Internet, for this we had to go to the library, today our reality is changing, and therefore the role of the teacher himself. The teacher is no longer the only source of knowledge, he becomes a mentor and a person who guides and helps to navigate the world of information. Because information can be completely different and not always reliable, you need to be able to critically comprehend it.

Does a teacher today also have to learn together with his students because of the huge amount of information that appears on the Internet?

A teacher is a person who must always learn. We should not forget that we are preparing our children for life in the future. The children who come to school today will enter the labor market in 15 years. Therefore, we must understand what to expect in order to prepare children for a new life.

What do you need to learn today so that you don’t have to relearn it in 10-15 years?

They have already thought for us and compiled an atlas of professions of the future, which is in the public domain. You can find out which specialties will be in demand. At the "Teacher of the Future" competition, during one of the tests, we were tasked with conducting a lesson for children. It was group work: students developed mini-projects and tried themselves as computer linguists and identity developers. We try to refer to future professions even in some daily events, to teach children those skills that will be useful.

Large corporations are now investing in human resources and educational projects to get future specialists from current schoolchildren. How do organizations cooperate with schools?

I would like to tell you about the projects of the Moscow Department of Education and Science. We have long been practicing trilateral cooperation: school, university and employer. For example, while studying in an engineering class as part of the Pre-professional Classes project, you can participate in the conference Engineers of the Future, which is traditionally held at MISiS, and get to know the university better. The Institute, in turn, cooperates with the Moscow Metro and subsequently helps the guys with employment.

Students can prepare for their future profession already from their school days. They also participate in engineering holidays, which are organized for them by the university, defend their projects at scientific and practical conferences, and integrate into the process of professional orientation. There are many opportunities today.

This year, some of my ninth-graders who graduated received Digital Curator certificates along with their high school diplomas thanks to an additional training program.

Some companies and enterprises cooperate with schools directly. For example, my school holds classes under the Yandex.Lyceum project. The students study within the program and receive certificates, which is very nice. Yandex cooperates quite actively with the Department of Education and Science, their services have been integrated into the Moscow Electronic School, the main resource for all Moscow schoolchildren and teachers, which contains various digital tools, interactive applications, lesson plans, and much more.

Due to the pandemic, education had to be transferred to an online format. What new opportunities have opened up in education?

The transition to distance learning was not a big blow for us, since my colleagues and I have been working with electronic resources and digital teaching tools for a long time. In my classroom, there is an interactive panel instead of a green chalkboard, so even before the pandemic, the students worked with tests, video lessons, and applications in a digital format.

I don't really like it when they talk about using new methods, because the methods have remained the same, we just have changed tools. Just as I explained the topic of complex sentences in class, I also explain it when I am on the other side of the screen. For the kids, this format was not an unpleasant surprise, they have been using various digital game resources for a long time, including for learning.
